Fashion Themed Film Screenings at Shelter in June

The hot summer months are upon us, which means less outdoor activities and more staying indoors. To beat the summer blues we normally experience in the UAE, Shelter will be screening movies every Tuesday for a month, starting from 1st June.

Curated by Tima Ouzden, a fashion designer, stylist and a writer, she's put together fashion themed selection of movies, that includes movies about fashion designers and the fashion industry, but also movies where there is a strong sense of fashion statement in them.

If you are tired of going to the mall or just tired of the summer blockbusters playing in our cinemas, Shelter will be a good alternative. The full list of movies and trailers are added below.

Details:
Date and time: Every Tuesday from 1st June, at 8.30pm.
Location: Shelter, Al Quoz, Dubai (location map)
Entry fee: Free entry for Shelter members and Dhs 15 for non-members

List of movies:

1st June - Grey Gardens (1hr 34 mins)

The true story of Mrs. Edith Bouvier Beale and her daughter Edie, the aunt and first cousin of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. Both mother and daughter lived in a world of their own behind the towering privets that surround their decaying 28-room East Hampton mansion known as "Grey Gardens," a place so far gone that the local authorities once threatened to evict them for violating building and sanitation codes. Mrs. Beale, a.k.a. "Big Edie," was born an aristocrat, sister of "Black Jack" Bouvier, Jackie O's father. "Little Edie" was an aspiring actress of striking beauty who put her New York life on hold to care for her mother and never left her side again. Together they descended into a strange life of dependence and eccentricity that none had ever shared until the Maysles Brothers arrived with their camera and tape recorder in hand.

8th June - Coco Avant Chanel (1hr 50 mins)

From humble beginnings to the heights of society, this is the astonishing story of Gabrielle Chanel, the legendary couturier who became a timeless symbol of success, freedom and style. Orphaned at a young age, Coco Chanel was raised in a convent school, where she learned to embroider and sew. Bored and dissatisfied with the living she could earn as a seamstress, she began singing in backstreet cafés and bars, where she attracted the attention of Étienne Balsan, a rich gentleman who immediately became intrigued by the stubborn, striking young ingénue. Swept up in her rich lover’s world, Coco soon drew the eyes of society towards her with her unique, elegant style in a time of flamboyance and excess. Just as controversial was the passionate love affair in which she became embroiled, which shattered the conventions of her society – a love so dangerous and forbidden it threatened to destroy her.

15th June - Rear Window (1hr 52 mins)

The weather is getting hotter, and photographer L.B. Jefferies (James Stewart) is stuck in his apartment with a broken leg and nothing to do but spy on his neighbours through their open windows across the way in the apartment complex. There's an attractive and scantily clad dancer, a songwriter, a lonely woman, and the Thorwalds (Raymond Burr and Irene Winston), a bickering couple, among others. But when Mrs. Thorwald disappears, Jefferies is sure that something's wrong. Soon, despite the warnings of his girlfriend Lisa (Grace Kelly), and his motherly nurse Stella (Thelma Ritter), Jefferies has out his binoculars and telephoto lens and is studying his neighbour 'like a bug under glass.' However, looking in from the outside might not be as safe as Jefferies assumes.

22nd June - Valentino: The Last Emperor (1hr 36 mins)

This movie provides a first-time glimpse into Valentino's world of bygone glamour. Filmed from June 2005 to July 2007, the crew shot over 250 hours of footage with exclusive, unprecedented access to Valentino and his entourage. The resulting non-fiction film is a portrait of an extraordinary partnership, the longest running in fashion, and a dramatic story about a master confronting the final act of his celebrated career.
