NUR
NUR is a fashion label started by Firyal Nur Al Hossain, "a New York born, Geneva raised and Nairobi based designer".
NUR means light in Arabic - Illuminating all that come into contact with it in terms of design, color, authenticity, boldness and a sense that each piece is an original, made especially for its wearer.
A clothing label that reflects a deeply rooted African cultural heritage and craftsmanship, linking each of us to the cradle of humanity – Kenya.
The line is made in a magical atmosphere filled with light under sustainable manufacturing practices in NUR’s artisanal workshop in the heart of Africa, Kenya. Here, local artisans produce international couture quality garments using handed-down techniques passed on through generations.
Inspired by uptown and downtown, traditional and contemporary, tribal and urban – NUR embodies all of those universal elements to create a refreshing new vision and take African fashion to its rightful place on the catwalks and streets of the world.
I came across the label's Autumn/Winter 2013 lookbook video by Seven Thirty Films and thought it would be nice to share it here with you.
Starring Firyal Nur Al Hossain, the video starts off by telling us "somewhere in the East of Africa, a decadent heist on a rose farm is underway". We follow her and Prince (her driver, her partner in crime?) in a car full of flowers to the beautifully melancholic song تخونوه (Tukhunou) / To Betray Him by Abdel Halim Hafez . We of course also get to see the clothes, which look bright, exotic and wearable.
